"the" Delaware - Lackawanna Railway
Local Service
Bridge 60 and Steamtown
Bridge 60 is certainly the hub of activity for the DL.  This location services as a junction between the Carbondale Line and the Pocono Main (which starts at this location).  Bridge 60 is also the DL's connection to CP Rail and Steamtown.  On any given day several sets of ALCo diesels (along with CP Power) can be seen working this area.  Steamtown services as an excellent point to view this activity without having to trespass on railroad property.  All photographs by Dave Crosby unless noted otherwise.
After completing their work at Bridge 60, several DL locomotives can sometimes be in position for night photography, such as this row of photographs. (1/07)
The 2045 (formerly the 645) and several sister units have just arrived with the Portland Turn and are tied down for the night. (1/07) Here several units are illuminated by the floodlights from the nearby Bridge 60 Tower. (1/07)

In another night view, the DL 3643 has tied up for the evening on what is called the "Independent Track". (3/03)
At Bridge 60 a set of MLW units has just arrived with a train from CP Rail at Taylor via the South Leg of the Bridge 60 Wye. (10/02) While two road units wait in the clear, one of GVT Rail's RS-11's from NY state switches a cut of ingot cars. (1-/02)
Doing it's best steam engine impersonation, DL S6 1044 switches a cut of cars at Bridge 60. (5/04) Here DL 334 and an RS-3 wait for permission from CP Rail to head to Taylor to pick up DL bound interchange. (5/01) DL 3643, a former CP Rail M-636, has just arrived from Taylor Yard with a cut of ingot cars. (4/00)
Like an early Conrail train of 25 years previous, Lehigh Valley and Erie Lackawanna liveried units mix in Steamtown Yard. (8/01) As viewed from Bridge 60 Tower, the DL 4118 arrives at Bridge 60 from the Strawberry Hill Running Track. (4/01) Also seen from Bridge 60 Tower, an impressive lashup of ALCo power awaits it's next assignment. (6/02)
Two brightly painted DL engines hustle a westbound freight train to Bridge 60. (5/01) An exciting mix of power arrives with inbound interchange for the DL from CP Rail at Bridge 60. (5/01) For several years the DL 3642, now in full GVT corporate livery wore an altered version of it's original Conrail paint scheme, as seen here at Bridge 60. (4/04)
For a few years a pair of former CP Rail C-424's operated on the DL.  They have since been sold to the Morristown & Erie. In 2004 the DL purchased a pair of RS-32's for use in Scranton.  Here is one of the units being taken to South Scranton for evaluation. Photo by Ed K.
C-420 334 and RS-3 4118 head for the south leg at Bridge 60. (5/01) Occasionally the grain trains operated by the DL will use power from roads such as the NS, as seen here at Bridge 60's North Leg. (8/02)
Nice to see you again... Former and current CP power mix at Bridge 60. (4/01)
A rare view indeed as Falls Road 1804 makes a guest appearance in Scranton. (4/96) NPS Photo by Ken Ganz. Usually in service in NY State, former BC Rail M420, the "Atomic Train" #642 makes a rare appearance on the DL. (8/98) NPS Photo by Ken Ganz

The Carbondale Line
The Carbondale line, formerly the DL Penn Division Main, stretches some 19 miles from Scranton to Carbondale.  About a dozen customers keep this line viable and in daily use.  While speeds and train lengths are not as dramatic as the Pocono Main, there still are interesting things to see from time to time.

Transfer Runs
The DL interchanges about 50% of their freight with CP Rail at Taylor Pennsylvania.  Taylor Yard is about 2 miles south of Bridge 60.  Prior to 2002 the DL interchanged thier NS cars through the Reading & Northern at Pittston, PA another several miles south of Taylor.  DL trains reached Pittston Yard via the Taylor Secondary (the former DL&W Bloomsburg branch) which begins at the south end of CP Rail's Taylor Yard.
The crew on DL 334 pauses at the former DL&W station in Taylor PA before entering the yard to retrieve their cars. (4/04)
