| Well Summer has (finally) arrived in Scranton. Hand in hand with the warmer weather comes the return of steam locomotive operations at Steamtown National Historic Site. Steamtown is planning a menu of special excursions featuring mainline running and rare milage for this summer. Check the out at www.nps.gov/stea/exc.htm | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Things are busy on the DL as well. Over the weekend of June 7-9 the DL successfully operated 3 detour trains for Norfolk Southern from Portland to the CP Rail connection at Bridge 60 in Scranton. The DL has also begun an intensive summer trackwork program. To allow for fewer interruptions for track workers, mixed Pocono Line trains will be departing Scranton at 1PM or later. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Over the winter of 2002/2003 the CP endured three major derailments in Luzurne County. These incidents (with no injuries or toxic spills) lead to detours, combined trains and wild motive power lashups. This combined with an upswing in traffic with the operation of Norfolk Southern trains over the line made for quite a show. If you could endure the cold, there was alot of action around Scranton this winter. | Traffic has remained strong throughout the winter on the D-L. A record cold snap lead to a record 103 cars delivered to Keystone Propane in Tobyhanna PA during January. A new operating plan which sees a Sunday crew every week and now thrice weekly runs to Portland has kept things moving nicely. The D-L was not immune to the wrath of Winter. For the first time since 1996 the D-L snowplow traversed the Pocono Mainline, several times in fact. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| The motive power situation on the D-L is always interesting. MHWA 645, 804 and 805, Falls Road 1802, DL 4118, 4103 and 1044 as well as the two big six axles 3643 and 3642 have all seen service. DL parent GVT Rail recently aquired two former SP S C-425's from Indiana. Both are now on the property. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Steamtown National Historic Site | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Steamtown operations are slated to begin in late April with short diesel train rides. Starting Mermorial Day Weekend stem operations and 26 mile round trips will commence using CP 2317. CN 3254 is down for wheel work and may operate later this year. Baldwin 26 is still down for major boiler/firebox work. For a complete schedule see the official Steamtown website, www.nps.gov.stea. In other news, restoration forces have finished the contract re-building of a former Seaboard "Jim Crow" combine for the Gold Coast Railroad Museum of Miami Florida. The car is a beautiful restoration inside and out and will head back to Florida by the end of the month. |
