| In May 2005 the Reading and Northern Railroad began operating regularly scheduled excursions in Jim Thorpe, PA as the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. Previously, excursion trips from Jim Thorpe had been operated by Rail Tours Inc. Rail Tours operated their final excursions during December of 2005. The new, much more scenic 16 mile round trips depart from the old CNJ station in Jim Thorpe and travel over the old CNJ and LV tracks to old Pen Haven Junction in the Lehigh Gorge State Park. Trips run weekends during the summer & fall. For more information check out the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Website. The Following photographs by Andrew Ottinger were taken during the grand opening on Mermorial Day Weekend 2005. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| The Ringling Brothers Circus comes to the Luzerne County Arena in Wilkes Barre each year and arrives by rail. Designated trains carry the entire circus around the country to each destination. During the Ringling Brothers 2005 show in Wilkes Barre, former Pocono Northeast GP-9 1750 (now owned by Air Products Inc) was used to switch out the consist for loading and unloading. | Steamtown Shop Update, April 05. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Work continues on two major restoration projects in the Steamtown shops. Both the B&M 3713 and PRR 1361 continue to make slow but steady progress as seen below. A bright spot came in April when the actual whistle used on the B&M 3713 was donated to the project. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Steamtown Shop Update, April 05. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| On Saturday, January 15, 2005 Steamtown National Historic Site operated a special excursion to Tobyhanna, PA for Ice Harvest Festival. This was the first winter season-mainline excursion operated by Steamtown since 1996 and the first ever to use CN 3254.
While unseasonably warm temperatures prevailed during the days leading up to the excursion, Saturday morning dawned with a chill in the air and snow on the ground in the Pocono's. Even though the preceading weeks mild weather prevented harvesting ice on the lake at Tobyhanna, passangers were able to enjoy the excursion and tour the restored depot as well as the recreated ice-house nearby. |
